Frequently asked questions

Q.
How will Buro Happold support me to achieve chartered status?
A.
Because professional accreditation is a key part of your graduate development, we have a dedicated member of the Learning and Development team who is on hand to advise and support you.

We have accredited schemes with the Institution of Civil Engineers, the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers, the Institution of Fire Engineers, and the Institution of Engineering and Technology; we also support applications across a wide range of other accrediting institutions.

Q.
How long does it take to become chartered at Buro Happold?
A.
Obviously, it depends on your own personal circumstances. That said, our accredited company schemes have been designed to be as user friendly as possible, helping you to meet your training objectives and, in turn, apply for chartered status in a lower than industry-average timescale. On average, this is within four years of graduating.

Q.
Can I apply for Chartered Engineer (CENG) status without a MEng?
A.
If your academic qualifications do not meet the benchmark for CENG level (MEng degree) it is still possible for you to apply for CENG; you have two options:
  • You can complete further learning to MEng level
  • You can progress using the technical report route (TRR). Here in addition to submitting the standard applications for CENG, you are required to submit a technical report showing you have gained the same level of technical knowledge through work experience as someone who has an MEng.

Q.
How can I get chartered if I haven’t got a qualification accredited by the Engineering Council?
A.
You can apply for an Academic Assessment, where by an institution will evaluate your qualifications to see if they meet their academic standard.
  • If the assessment is successful you will be able to progress along the standard route towards chartership with that institution
  • If you are unsuccessful, then you have two options:
  • You can complete further learning to MEng level
  • You can progress using the technical report route (TRR). Here in addition to submitting the standard applications for CENG, you are required to submit a technical report showing you have gained the same level of technical knowledge through work experience as someone who has an MEng.

Q.
How should I go about deciding between institutions to gain professional accreditation with?
A.
If you are unable to decide between a number of institutions, then you will be supported in your decision with advice from your line manager and group director and on occasion it may be relevant for you to seek professional accreditation in more than one institution. Assuming you have the support of your line manager, Buro Happold will be happy to support you. It is worth pointing out, however, that a number of the institutions have agreements with one another, meaning you don’t have to go through the professional review twice.

Q.
Is there any payment support for professional accreditation available to me?
A.
As long as you have agreement from your group director and line manager, Buro Happold are keen to support you with the registration for up to two institutions.

Q.
What if I’m not based in the UK, but want to obtain UK Chartered Engineer (CENG) status?
A.
With the agreement of your line manager, you may decide that getting (CENG) status in the UK is something you want to work towards. In most cases the process will be the same as in the UK. However some institutions have specific requirements such as coming to the UK to take the professional review. As a result it is worth checking with Learning and Development first.

Q.
What if I’m looking to get chartered in the UK but have a qualification from elsewhere?
A.
Depending on your location of study, the Engineering Council UK may or may not ‘recognise’ your qualification. To find out if your qualification is recognised by the ECUK please visit the Engineering Council UK website.

If your professional qualification is acceptable you may progress with the standard route.

If your academic qualification is not acceptable you can apply for an Academic Assessment. The educational assessment will be evaluated by your institution, they will look at your current education and work experience to see if they will allow you to join at the appropriate level of membership.
  • If you are successful with your educational assessment, you will be able to progress along the standard route towards chartership with that institution
  • If you are not successful, then you have two options:
    • You can complete further learning to MEng level
    • Alternatively you can progress using the technical report route (TRR). Here in addition to submitting the standard applications for CENG, you are required to submit a technical report showing you have gained the same level of technical knowledge through work experience as someone who has an MEng.
