Anna Matthews, Building Services (Mechanical), Leeds

Having graduated with a MEng in Architectural Engineering, I then spent a couple of weeks at a small architects’ office, plus a two month stint with a structural engineering company. I then gained a place on the final year of the Happold Trust Sponsorship Scheme, and spent ten weeks at Buro Happold’s Leeds office. And what a ten weeks!

The first thing that struck me was their professionalism and multidisciplinary approach. I knew immediately that this was where I wanted to build my career. The people in Leeds were great, and the offices had a really, how can I say, creative feel to them.

I’ve now been working with Buro Happold for just over five years. One word to sum up my time so far? Varied! As well as getting involved in different types of construction and infrastructure projects, I’m involved at a number of different project stages. I really enjoy being able to take a project from concept stage and see it through construction to when it becomes a fully occupied building.  Every project is different and the mix of people you get to work with adds real interest. 

For me, the real benefit of joining Buro Happold as a graduate is their commitment to learning and development. And through regular reviews with your manager and mentor, you can discuss your progress, identify any training needs and work out exactly where you want your career to go. And because Buro Happold’s training is accredited, you’ll have all the assistance, encouragement and support you need to gain chartered status – the holy grail for all engineers!

Responsibility also comes early with Buro Happold – very early, in fact. Just a few months into my career I was given a small project to take responsibility for, with the support of engineers back in the office. It was a steep learning curve but has proved to be a real springboard. I’m now working on much larger projects and taking on more responsibility.
