I joined Buro Happold after graduating back in 1995, so I’ve been here 13 years. For me, it’s a great company to work for. You feel looked after and that your opinion counts. Plus you get some really exciting projects to work on.
Although I head up project teams and develop client relationships, my role is also about mentoring graduates and engineers. From this perspective, I can say that the company genuinely put a lot of effort into the graduate scheme and care about developing young people. The training scheme itself is really good, with hands-on coaching and peer group forums. Mind you, graduates have to be bright, enthusiastic and keen to learn and get stuck in if they want to succeed.
High standards are the norm at Buro Happold. In fact that’s one of the biggest challenges of working here. However, that means that there’s a fantastic sense of achievement when you help create something, especially as what we produce is so tangible (i.e. buildings).
I like the fact our contribution is valued and appreciated - and that I work with some brilliant people. It’s a great working life generally. You get the benefits of a medium-sized company but work day-to-day in a smaller team, where your ideas are heard, valued and very often used. That’s why I think it’s so good for graduates.
