The Massar Children’s Discovery Centre is a purpose built project dedicated to providing an exciting and educational facility exclusively for children. The environmental strategy for the building was developed to respond to the Mediterranean climate, with solar panels gathering energy in the summer to charge the site’s ground heat store for use in the winter. The construction materials for the building have been carefully selected to emphasise and enhance the local traditions and skills of Syria.

The challenge for the lighting team on this exciting educational building was to create a central courtyard area which appears day lit while minimising heat gain from the large expanse of roof glazing required. Following 3D computer modelling, an optimum glazed area was calculated and we worked closely with the architect to establish the size and location of the glazed openings.
